A lot of women may not always feel like exercising during their period and this may very well be the last thing on your mind. However, what you may not know is that scientific evidence has shown that it has a number of benefits:

1. It reduces pain

If you’re like me and suffer from severe or even mild menstrual pain, then exercising can help levitate this pain away. That way you can feel more comfortable during your period.

2. It improves blood circulation

Exercise helps improve the blood circulation within your pelvic area, which is a huge benefit, especially when you’re on your period. Blood circulation is important to prevent clotting and keep the blood healthy, especially if you have heavy flow.

3. It’s a great mood booster

Endorphins are just one of many neurotransmitters released when you exercise. Physical activity also stimulates the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These brain chemicals play an important part in regulating your mood which, in turn, keeps those pesky menstrual mood swings in check.

4. It can help improve your sleep

Regular exercise can positively impact serotonin levels in your brain. Raising your levels of serotonin boosts your mood and overall sense of well-being. It can also help improve your appetite and sleep cycles, which are often negatively affected by depression. Sleep plays an important part in your overall health and will give your body time to recharge and deal with the changes going on throughout your cycle at this time.

5. It can help your mental health

Focusing on your body’s movements during exercise may help distract you from what’s going on in your body during your cycle. Setting and meeting exercise-related goals may also boost your confidence and sense of control. This allows the the brain to recover and focus on something positive and sending the right signals throughout the body.

When we talk about exercise, this doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym and going at it hell for leather, as this can be quite challenging for your body during your menstrual cycle. So how about a long walk, gentle swimming, yoga or stretching? Some of which can be done from home.

I would have to say, the best form of exercise I find helps me during the dreaded ‘red’ days is swimming. Swimming has minimal impact on the body, and the feeling of weightlessness is relaxing and takes away thoughts of the pain — at least for me.

Don’t ever be afraid to exercise during your period, because the benefits are so important for you, physically and mentally. Always remember, a little or light exercise is better than no exercise at all.
